Casa Perfect New York gallery includes David Chipperfield staircase
March 11, 2019Design gallery The Future Perfect has opened an exhibition space inside a townhouse in New York's West Village, filled with collectible homeware and featuring a wooden staircase designed by David Chipperfield.
The five-storey residence provides a home for Casa Perfect New York – an appointment-only gallery that follows a similar concept that The Future Perfect created on the West Coast.
"As soon as I opened Casa Perfect in Los Angeles, I immediately knew I wanted to replicate the concept in New York," said The Future Perfect founder David Alhadeff.
"The most crucial step was finding the right space to bring the concept to life in an authentic way that felt true to The Future Perfect's vision."
Contemporary designs and one-off pieces are arranged to give the impression of a lived-in residence. All of the items are for sale, but Alhadeff's vision for the space is for visitors to explore and discover, rather than just act as a store.
"Casa is first and foremost about the experience. The shopping comes second," he said. "The townhouse I found will assuredly create a meaningful and noteworthy experience."
At the heart of the building, a pale-wood staircase by British architect Chipperfield connects all five levels.
The stair flights dog-leg up through an atrium, where a brass lamp by Michael Anastassiades descends through the middle. Artworks are displayed on the landings and walls
White walls and black-painted wood floors offer a minimal backdrop for the designs in some rooms, while others are decorated with ombre wallpaper or an altogether darker palette.
An all-black kitchen in the basement includes wine coolers that double as display vitrines for vessels, and a marble island countertop where more items are placed.
The building's brick exterior is also painted black on its rear facade, visible from a ground-level patio area that is accessed via rotating glass panels.
Several artists and designers are represented by The Future Perfect for the first time in the townhouse, including Collection Particulière, Marcin Rusak, and Adam Pogue for Commune.
The initial presentation at Casa Perfect New York also includes works by John Hogan, Eric Roinestad, Chris Wolston, Chris Stuart, Chen Chen and Kai Williams, Reinaldo Sanguino, Floris Wubben, Charles De Lisle, Marta Sala, Piet Hein Eek, Dimore Studio, and Philippe Malouin.
The Casa Perfect in LA is located in a Beverly Hills villa once owned by Elvis Presley, after it spent a one-year stint in a mid-century Hollywood Hills home.
The Future Perfect also operates spaces at 55 Great Jones Street in New York and 3085 Sacramento Street in San Francisco.
The gallery was founded by Alhadeff in 2003, and has since presented individual showcases of work by designers and studios including Tbilisi-based Rooms, London-based Anastassiades, and New York-based Ladies & Gentlemen Studio.
