Minimal Rail Desk 01 by Phan Thao Dang balances on two bent tubes
September 15, 2018Just three main parts make up this minimalist table by California-based designer Phan Thao Dang, who reduced the design to its "necessary elements" for easy manufacture and shipping.
The Rail Desk 01 was created as a prototype from a white block of dense composite board, which forms the work surface, and two black, bent steel tubes that provide support. The result is a starkly simple design.
"Suited for both homes and offices, RD01 is a graphical, low-key addition to any modern space," said Dang. "Its visual light appearance is based on the simple construction of the legs."
Each of the tubular support is V-shaped in profile, so the vertical elements on either side angle in opposite directions. At the top, they slot into machine-cut holes in the sides of the solid white block.
"Manufactured from bent tubular steel, the opposing angle legs are designed to provide maximum stability with minimum parts," Dang said.
The designer's intention was for the desk to be as simple as possible, so that it would be easy to produce, dispatch and assemble. The pieces can be flat-packed, and no fasteners are required to put them together.
"Designed for manufacturability, the parts have been reduced to its necessary elements," said Dang, who is originally from Germany and first designed RD01 in 2011.
"The unique construction method has the potential to be extended into collection of pieces to include a bench and a shelving system," he added.
Dang's other designs are equally pared back, from a coat hanger bent from a flat metal sheet, to his Pipe Collection of seats made from sewage pipes – which is shortlisted in the furniture design category of this year's Dezeen Awards.
